The Gentle Pigeon who learned to say NO
In a wide green valley wrapped between tall blue mountains, morning arrived softly.
Mist floated above the grass, cool air brushed gently against the leaves. Sunlight spilled like golden honey over the treetops. The river hummed quietly, as if singing a sleepy song to the waking forest.
In that peaceful valley lived a gentle pigeon named peppy.
Peppy was not the strongest bird in the sky, nor the fastest flyer. But he has something far more noticeable- a soft heart and sensitive mind.
Her believed every creature was good.
He believed promises were sacred.
He believed friendship was more valuable than anything else.
If someone asked for help, Peppy would never refuse.
if someone looked worried, his own heart would feel heavy. He found it difficult to say "No", even when saying yes hurt him.
The other animals often said,"Peppy is kind.... may be too kind."
and peppy believed that having a soft heart was the best thing in the world.
One morning, the first rays of sunlight slipped gently through the thick green leaves. The valley glowed in soft gold. The cool air carried the fresh scent of dew and wildflowers.
High on a sturdy mango tree branch, peppy stirred in his nest. Warm sunlight touched his feathers. He Stretched one wing, then the other. The crisp air filled his llungs, washing away the last trace of sleep.
The leaves rustled softly. Birds sand in the distance. The river sparkled like scattered diamonds.
Peppy opened his eyes and smiled. "oh, what a beautiful morning," he chirped happily. "The air feels so fresh... my wings feel so light today."
He fluttered down to the river bank. The water are clear and calm. he dipped his beak and splashed cool drops over his feathers. The chilly touch made him shiver- Then laugh.
The breeze playfully ruffled his feathers as he carefully cleaned and arranged them. After all, today he was meeting his dearest friend, Bunny.
Peppy and Bunny has been friends since childhood. They had raced along the riverbank-Bunny hopping fast while peppy flew low behind him. They had shared berries, secrets and dreams.
"Our friendship is strong," peppy thought proudly. " I can always trust him."
with shining feathers and cheerful heart, peppy lifted his wings and flew towards the old mango tree near the river, where bunny and peppy usually meet.
On the way, he noticed rocky the raccoon in the distance."Oh no," Peppy thought gently. "if i stop now, rocky will as me to stay and chat for hours and wont leave without having lunch. I must not be late for bunny."
without drawing attention. Peppy flew a little higher and changed direction slightly.
"I'll meet rocky another day," he told himself.
His heart beat softly.
Thump... thump.. thump...
Peppy landed near the mango tree with excitement fluttering inside him." I hope Bunny is already waiting," He thought nervously. " I don't want to disappoint him."
But when he looked around... Bunny was not there.
"That's strange," Peppy murmured."he's usually here before me."
He tilted his head playfully."Oh! maybe he is hiding to tease me."
The grass swayed gently. The river flowed peacefully. Sunlight shimmered between the branches.
Peppy searched behind the tree trunk."Bunny? i can see your ears!" he joked.
No answer.
He checked the bushes, the rocks, even near the river bank.
But Bunny was truly not there.
A small wave of disappointment passed through him."May be he is just late," Peppy said quietly.
For a moment, his excitement faded. But the breeze brushed his feathers gently, and the warmth of the sun comforted him.
" It's such a beautiful day," he whispered. " I should not let small things spoil it."
After some time, Bunny finally arrived.
" Peppy! sorry... o got delayed, "Bunny said lightly.
Peppy's face brightened." I thought you were hiding!"
They sat under the mango tree, talking about their daily activities and laughing about childhood memories. for a while, everything felt just like old times.
One evening, when the sky turned orange and the air smelled of rain, Bunny came rushing to Peppy's nest.
" Peppy... i really need your help," Bunny said, lowering his ears.
He explained that he has borrowed food from the crow family but could not return it on time." I Know you always manage things wisely," Bunny said."if you could spare some seeds for a short while, i promise i'll return them in few days."
Peppy's heart tightened. Inside his mind, thoughts rushed.
" I Want to help him. But where can i get so many seeds?"
aloud, he said softly,"Bunny... i don't really have anything extra."
that was partly true. Peppy kept his grains stored carefully for emergencies- storms, harsh winters, and difficult days.
" I also don't like borrowing from others," Peppy added." if i borrow, i must repay."
but bunny pleased," Please. I Promise i won't create any trouble for you."
peppy felt torn.
" I do have emergency grains,"he admitted to himself."But those are for survival."
after a long pause, another thought formed.
"maybe i can borrow from someone else just for a short time. when Bunny returns the grains, I'll repay the lender. no one will suffer."
He heart beat loudly. Thump.. thump... thump...
"I'll help you,"Peppy finally said.
that night, under the pale moonlight, peppy borrowed grains from the parrots near the tall palm trees. They agreed, but only with extra grains as interest.
Peppy hesitated... then accepted. He gave the borrowed grains to Bunny.
"he will return them soon," Peppy told himself.
But the night air felt heavier than usual.
Days passed. Then weeks.
when the parrots asked for repayment, peppy gently reminded Bunny."Just a little more time," Bunny replied.
weeks turned into months.
The parrots became stern." when will we get what belongs to us?" they demanded.
Peppy felt uneasy. He reminded Bunny again."why are you worrying so much?"Bunny replied casually."Didn't i promise?"
The pressure grew. The parrots warned him sharply. Peppy stopped sleeping peacefully.Every rustle of leaves made his heart race.
Finally, unable to bear the fear and shame, Peppy looked at his emergency storage." These grains were for storms... for survival," he whispered."But instead of living in fear and humiliation everyday...maybe it is better to empty this store than lose my peace."
with a heave heart, Peppy repaid the parrots using his emergency grains.
That winter, his storage was empty. some nights, he slept with a half filled stomach. and for that day on... he never reminded Bunny again.
It was no longer about grains. It was about a promise that had quietly faded away. One cloudy afternoon, Bunny appeared again.
" Peppy, my dear friend! I need a small favour. I Promise I'll return it quickly"
There was no sign that he remembered the past. Peppy's mind flashed back
The empty storage...
The cold winter...
The threatening voices...
The sleepless nights...
But this time., his heart beat was calm.
" Bunny, I don't have grains to lend. and i don't believe in borrowing anymore. It creates messy days." peppy said gently.
Bunny pleaded again.
Peppy quietly went inside his nest and looked at the small bundle of grains he had gathered recently." These are just enough for the next days, but this much i can give without fear. this will not push me into trouble." Peppy thought to himself.
He carried the small bundle outside.: This is all i have right now," Peppy said calmly. " I don't have more than this."
Bunny looked disappointed but took the small bundle and left.
Peppy watching him go.
For the first time in years... his chest felt light/
No fear... No Pressure..., No restless heartbeat.
Just Peace.
After Bunny disappeared into the trees, Peppy sat quietly." Did i do something wrong?" he wondered.
" Have i lost my helping nature?
He looked at the valley below.
" No," he answered slowly. " I did not refuse help. I gave what i truly had."
" What i refused was the fear.. the sleepless nights... the unnecessary trouble."
He nodded thoughtfully.
" I have learned from my own experience that it is better to give only what we truly have and expect nothing in return... than to give more than we can afford and depend on promises that may never be kept."
Peppy closed his eyes peacefully.
" I am still kind," he whispered. " But now i am also careful."
and as the clouds slowly drifted away, a soft ray of sunlight touched his nest.
This time, his heart was lighter than ever.
